Nokia/Symbian and Open Source – What does it mean? UPDATE

Update: I took this further and developed this for an article I wrote over on GoMoNews.

I’m sure some of you will have heard about the Nokia/Symbian deal. Everyone is raving about it, and making Symbian Open Source is a huge thing which I totally applaud. This deal makes so much sense for Nokia, Symbian and for a lot of the the players as well. For developers as well this is huge. There are over 7 million lines of code in the Symbian OS and being able to see that in an environment framework like Eclipse where you can see examples of other code and others ways of using it is inspirational for developing and solving problems.

But what I really wanted to do is point you to John Forsyth’s blog for a better description of how this will all work form a development point of view. It’s the best explanation I have found, but then John does lead the strategy group at Symbian, so if anyone can explain it, he can!!!!!
