BT Home Hub 2.0 + Wi-Fi on mac OSX

Ok, this is the Holy Grail for some. This took me ages to work out what the problem was but finally i have got my iBook, OSX and the BT Home Hub 2.0 (the new black shiny one) working.

Now I had tried everything and I cant be assed to go back and try everything again..so here are a couple of things you might need to do..BUT first

go into the adbanced settings on the Home Hub and make sure that in the wireless settings the network is only running 802.11 b/g NOT b/g/n. Changing this let me connect.

I also had been trying the std fix for wirless, putting the $ sign in front of the password..I cant remeber if I had to so this or not in the final solution.

I also put mine on Channel 12 but I dont think that made the differance.

I can literraly switch the network to 802.11 b/g/n and my iBook won’t connect..swtich to b/g and its off!!!!.

  1. Hi there,

Eternally grateful to you for this nugget of information! I was really coming to the end of options until I finally stumbled across your post. Thanks for sharing :)

  2. Hi,

O joy of joys!!!! I have been on the phone to India for hours over this. Being very new to MAC I was a bit unsure what advanced settings to make and BT India made me change all kinds of settings and resetting the hub etc etc but all to no avail. Now am fully up and running wireless using WPA.

For anyone googling this – I could not connect ibook G3 running OS X 10.4.11 to BTHomeHub 2. I would keep getting message telling me there was an error trying to connect or, if using network connections, would get message saying network does not support encryption method.

The BT manual says to connect using WPA personal and my iphone connected perfectly but I did discover that I could connect the ibook by switching to WEP security which would have meant lower security and reprogramming all the telephone handsets. But at least it eliminated any fault with the airport card but so it had to be the hub!!

So almost at wits end but after reading this post and changing the settings mentioned (running on channel 9) I am now connected wirelessly with WPA – hallelujah!!

Another sad reflection on BT’s second rate equipment and many many thanks to Creative Geek for sharing this.

  3. After endless useless phone calls to BT changing the setting to b/g has meant I can now go wireless. Can’t believe BT don’t suggest that when you ring up with a mac problem.
Thankyou very much you made my day.

  4. Connect to your home hub settings by going to http://bthomehub.home/login.lp. In advanced settings, change 8021.bg. It will then connect.

  5. You don’t need to do any of this. All i did to connect my ibook g3 to my BT home hub was change the wireless security to WEP instead of WPA-PSK. The internet runs alot faster if you buy a wireless N+ laptop/adapter.

  6. Just upgraded from 3 year old Hub 1 to latest black Hub 2.
iBook G4 & iMac Intel can see the SSID, but keep returning connection error, although Hub phone works & so does ethernet. In frustration, I reconnected my old Hub, & everything back to normal. Took my new Hub to work & tested it. I changed the channel from 6 (default) to 11, security to WEP (as I have an internet radio that does not do WPA…), & changed network to b/g, as I have no ‘n’ devices at home.
Everything suddenly works!! The proof of course, will be installing later at home, so fingers crossed……
This is the first computer product I have REALLY struggled with: Apple products ‘just work’!!!!

  7. BT are just rubbish, has taken me an hour to reconfigure my new black hub2 with 3 imacs. Do they not test? I’m bored with the “unplug your phone line, change the filter etc.” So cheers for the info, it worked after putting the $ sign in front of the password and changing channel to 11. How is anyone meant to know that? BT Shmee T.

  8. Thank you, creativegeek! Because I found your tip after a short visit with my friend Google, my daughter is now connected via a BT hub in Scotland. She simply couldn’t bear to be that far away from her BFFs in the States for a whole week, and you restored family harmony. Good job outta you!

  9. Mate you are a life saver! My macbook was working fine this morning then all of a sudden the wireless stopped working, after being on the phone to BT for nearly 45 minutes and repeating everything they said about 4 times, they came to the conclusion that something was wrong with my mac. the tossers.

    Cheers
    Lewis

  10. An hour and a half on the phone and nothing they can do. My 3 Macs are faulty according to BT!

  11. Update:
My Hub 2 has been working fine since turning off ‘n’!!!!!
Problem is, I am thinking of upgrading to ‘n’ on my iMac & hooking up Apple TV, whilst at the same time I have my trusty old iBook G4 which is useful for surfing in bed/garden/etc. Perhaps I could turn on internet sharing on my iMac & access it with iBook? Anyone have any thoughts on this???

A pretty ridiculous state of affairs, or is there a compatibility bug in the wireless ‘n’ spec peculiar to Mac?? Maybe I should just buy a Netgear router instead? After all, what price can you put on stress??

  12. you are a legend sir. thanks for your nuggets of wisdom!

  13. It would seem it is not just a Mac problem. My Windows XP Sony Vaio laptop crashed every time I turned on the wireless switch to connect to my new BT home hub 2.0. But my Pure Evoke internet radio connected fine. To be fair to BT they did not try to pull the “it must the laptop sir” routine but they still failed spectacularly to find an answer. After over 2 hours on the phone they decided they would send a new hub out to me. After putting the phone down I thought about it for a few minutes and thought – I wonder if it is an “n” incompatabilty? Changed the hub settings to b/g only and problem solved!
